HERE are some key points from the Global Sustainable Development Report, which was drafted by an independent group of 15 scientists appointed by @unitednations Secretary-General @antonioguterres 🔵 Business and sustainability aren’t either/or propositions - economic growth can be decoupled from environmental impacts. 🔷 Agriculture is responsible for 80% of global deforestation - climate and environmental impacts of food production must be minimized. 🔶 Approximately 1 billion people do not have access to electricity ⚡️, mainly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Increasing access to clean energy is needed to reduce poverty and enhance well-being. 🔸 If current trends continue, cities 🌇 will contain approximately 70% of the world’s population and produce 85% of global economic output by 2050. Sustainable urban development can’t wait! #GSDR #GlobalGoals #SustainableDevelopment #unitednations 📷 @unsplash / Carl Cerstrand
Population growth & #ClimateChange are putting pressure on residents of Kenya's Tana Delta, sparking conflict for access to land. ⠀ ⠀ Dide Daride elder Omar lost 45 cattle over the last dry season due to a lack of pasture. “Before, the delta was full of water, and there was enough pasture. But now the delta is beginning to dry,” he says. “Sometimes there is no grass on the ground, the area is completely dry.”⠀ ⠀ ⠀ The Restoration Initiative is working to defuse local tensions and rebalance the delta’s ecosystem. #UNCCDCOP14 📷 @lisajanemurray
Monday is #OzoneDay! Under the #MontrealProtocol, nations have cut out 99% of ozone-depleting substances. The ozone layer is healing & as a result avoided millions of cases of skin cancer & cataracts. On Ozone Day and every day, we urge everyone to keep up the good work & keep on healing. 📷 @nasa
Sirocco, haboob, yellow dust, white storms, and the harmattan 🌪️— meaning sand and dust storms—are a natural phenomenon linked with land and water management, and #ClimateChange. The storms have socio-economic impacts on human health, agriculture, industry, transportation, water and air quality. Dust can cause damage to lungs and worsen the symptoms of bronchitis and respiratory diseases such as asthma. ⠀ The fluctuation in their intensity, magnitude or interaction with each other is what can make them unpredictable and dangerous. ⠀ ⠀ A new global coalition to combat sand and dust storms was launched at #UNCCDCOP14.⠀

⚠ “Business as usual” could lead to catastrophic global sea-level rise, says a new study.⠀ ⠀ Scientists conclude that if global temperatures reach 5°C above pre-industrial era levels, there is a 1 in 20 chance that global mean sea level rise could exceed 2 metres. ⠀ ⠀ What would that mean? ⠀ ⠀ Such a rise over the next 80 years could trigger the gradual displacement of millions of people around the world and swallow up an area of land 3 times the size of Texas. Major global cities, including London, New York and Shanghai would end up, at least partially, underwater.⠀ ⠀ #ActNow #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #AdaptOurWorld
We can all do our part to confront the damaging impacts of climate change. Simple actions make a big difference and the more people act, the bigger the impact. Thanks @aidanrgallagher for challenging the world to #ActNow in the lead up to the @unitednations #ClimateAction Summit. 📷 by @justinwu and thanks to @thekrimgroup & @variety !

🌽 1.3 billion tons of food is lost or wasted each year – nearly a third of what is being produced. Research from top food & agriculture experts suggests the world is at a critical moment in the fight against food loss & waste 💪 ⬇️🗑 By addressing the loss we are also mitigating #climatechange. A 50% reduction would avoid converting an area of natural ecosystems the size of Argentina into agricultural land & lower greenhouse gas emissions by 1.5 gigatons per year by 2050. / New report from @worldresources #thinkeatsave #GlobalFLWActionAgenda
