Inktober: Buddy 🌸 Does your child have a buddy? . Solo play is often a developmental milestone, because much as we need time for ourselves, infants need their alone time too! But after 3-4 years of age, when a child among a group of peers, doesn't engage with them and wants to be left all alone and enjoys playing by himself/ herself, that could be a sign of Autism Spectrum Disorder. (Do not diagnose your child by yourself or with the help of Google, please go to a professional ) . Autism, as I keep stressing, isn't a bad thing! It's just another trait and shows us how neurodiverse we all are! It is something which isn't and shouldn't be treated, we can help and support a child with Autism and provide them with the push that they need! ♥️ Early identification of Autism helps in better management and support of the child! . . . #AutieJoy Day Two: Most Recent Special Interest I guess this one is more weird but it's...corvids! The 'r' is essential in that word now 😅 This interest occured due to reading 'The Raven', and moving back to a place where a murder of crows caw outside of my house each day. It manifested as all my interests do - researching and collecting. I've tagged the artists of these awesome pieces, they create other things too. Funny how a single poem can be the catalyst for a new interest. 2 years ago today it snowed and I overdid it with the layers! 🤣 This is one of my favorite pics of Cece! Can it please snow at least once this year? I was talking to my parents last week about our favorite family memories in the snow. When I was Cece’s age we lived on a really big hill that made for some IDEAL sledding!! Looking back I can’t believe how many times my dad pulled me and my sister back up the steep hill!! Now as an adult, and a parent, those snowy memories mean so much more! All I knew was the fun and magic of a snow-day, I realize now that my dad was helping create the magic! And we can’t forget my mom who ALWAYS had hot chocolate waiting when we came inside! ❤️ Ready when you are, snow!
Lucky number 7!! Happy birthday to this baby of mine, who has taught me how special life can truly be! 🌟 . This accordion was one of those gifts you regret almost immediately 🤪 but she loves it SO MUCH!! Also when I asked Cece how old she was this morning she said “Seven!” and right when I said “yes!” she added “TEEN!!!!!!” 🤣🤣🤣 I can only handle 7 for now!! ❤️
YES YOU CAN. ❤️ When I realized my favorite special needs mom (is that a thing? 💁♀️ ) @etst had created a beautiful line of pennants I HAD to have one!! Then I found out my favorite little shop in Fayetteville ( @citysupplyfayetteville ) was carrying them!! THEN I realized a portion of the proceeds were going to an incredible charity ( @rubysrainbow ) that I love so much! It was as if the whole thing was orchestrated just for ME! 🤣 The words and phrases on these pennants should be painted all over the world! ❤️ In a time where positivity and encouragement are often hard to find, this “yes you can” banner will serve as a daily reminder for Cece...and me!
You better not smile!! 🤪 It’s Cece’s first day of 1st grade and even though she wasn’t excited about obligatory front porch pictures, she couldn’t wait to see her teachers!
A star is born! 🌟 Somebunny likes the spotlight!
We did it! We walked the runway last night for @momandsomuch and Cece did GREAT! More importantly, we were a tiny part of raising money for the @peaceathomeshelter 💜. Thank you to @chantelshuler for being a women’s advocate, a special friend, and a total inspiration!! (Your heart is gigantic ) Yet again, I’m TRULY inspired by this event and the women involved. Backstage was a beautiful zoo of mom’s helping and complementing each other!! And the runway was the perfect mix of diverse, outstanding women! It was MAGIC.
Miss Arkansas is TONIGHT!!! Cece made me so proud this week throughout all the events! We’re cheering on her special queen @lauraleighturner 🙏🤞👑 If you’re in Arkansas the pageant will be broadcasted live statewide! If you aren’t in Arkansas you can livestream the event online!💫
Horsin’ around. Like, literally. 🎠
You’re never fully dressed without a SMILE. ⭐️ Took this pic of Cece 2 years ago and it’s still my favorite! She’s such a bright light! ❤️
Didn’t know it was possible for one little girl to be so loved! Thank you for caring and praying for our little Cece! 💗
Listen to the mustn'ts, child. Listen to the don'ts. Listen to the shouldn'ts, the impossibles, the won'ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me... Anything can happen, child. Anything can be. SHEL SILVERSTEIN
Thanks so much to @peekaboo_magazine for asking me to share Cece’s story! It’s such a precious magazine! If you’re local to NW Arkansas pick a free copy up at most businesses! 💗 I put the spread in my stories!
Love Always Wins. . . This is the third Valentine’s Day that John has (all on his own ) ordered Cece a corsage for her hair. He’s just the best. ❤️
Birthday dance. 🌟
Holly Jolly Christmas! ❤️ I took these pics a few months ago for my sister’s Christmas cards. Cece jumped in (literally ) for a few! This is true life right here. Alllllll the energy!! I hope y’all had a great day! Seeing Christmas through Cece’s eyes this year has been my favorite part! 🌟
Happy Thanksgiving! ...Or Thanksgibbing as Cece says! 🤣 She is finally starting to feel and act like her usual silly, spunky self again!! 🙌 I’ve gotten some questions and DMs about what Cece had. Her official diagnosis was Rhabdomyolysis, which is “A breakdown of muscle tissue that releases a damaging protein into the blood.” Cece’s calf muscles were affected, which is why she couldn’t walk. Luckily the Arkansas Children’s Hospital was able to pinpoint the problem and treat our little girl like a queen in the process! I’m thankful for so many things today but having Cece back to normal is at the top of my list!! 🌟
Sweet girl. 🌟 . Voting with her future in mind today! 👊
Fall doll. 🌟
“Ta da!!” This was a year ago today! Still obsessed. 💗
On Tuesdays (and Thursdays ) Cece has school and then therapies after school so it can make for a long day! She was DRAINED when we got home tonight so I just wanted her to be a kid and do whatever she wanted. She chose to take her shoes off and walk in the new mulch John laid this weekend! 🤣💗 It was her little sensory zen garden!
First day // Last day. ☀️☀️☀️ The Sunshine school has become a second home for Cece. Within these walls all children are treated equally. There are syndromes and disorders and wheelchairs and leg braces, but none of that makes a bit of difference here. Most mornings children are greeted by a smiling local police officer in the lobby and most afternoons Gary (the director of transportation ) gives each student a high-five as they leave. Everyone was a cheerleader for Cece here. Her wins were their wins and it felt so good for even the tiniest of gains to be celebrated. Although she’s heading on to kindergarten, we’re so happy to continue with her therapists here after school! And John will continue to serve as a board member! The Sunshine School will always have a place in our hearts and I’m so grateful that 60 years ago, 2 special needs families saw a need and created this extraordinary school!
You are my favorite person on Earth. ☀️
The beach was her happy place! ☀️
Spellin' like a CHAMP! Ok, this probably isn't huge and exciting to most people but to me, it's EVERYTHING. Two years ago Cece wasn't even talking!! So to hear her spelling...it makes me ugly cry!! She just started spelling out random words with the refrigerator magnets last week! It was like our personal Charlotte's Web! 😂 I walked by the fridge and saw LIGHT spelled out. It stopped me in my tracks!! The next day it was BALLOON, followed by STARS. I kept waiting to see new words and they kept coming!!! What a week! 🌟
(This post is about sex so you can choose not to read it if you don’t want to ) Autistic people of all support needs & abilities need to be given a comprehensive sex education. We need to be taught not only about the mechanics of it, but also about consent, boundaries, sensory seeking, pleasure, and when it’s appropriate vs. not appropriate to do sexual things. It’s also important to note that many autistic people process sex & sexual feelings differently. Some of us masturbate as a stim (sexual stims are usually a form of masturbation ), and some of us are hyper-sexual in a sensory seeking way. Others of us may find the sensation too intense, and not want to engage in any sexual activity at all. It all depends on the person. The most important thing is that all of us are taught (in ways we understand ) about consent, appropriate vs. not appropriate sexual behavior, and the sensory aspect of it. I have experience working in a classroom with autistic teenage boys, and several of them had sexual stims that they’d do in front of everyone in class. I think it was often out of boredom, but it was also a sensory-seeking behavior. I think everyone would have benefited if the boys had been given a matter-of-fact lesson about masturbation, and what times are appropriate vs. not. As it was, they were usually just ushered into the bathroom or told to have “quiet hands” which was not a particularly effective intervention (in addition to that phrase carrying a LOT of cultural baggage ). There need to be better tools, resources, and methods for educating autistic people about sex. I think the best way for those to be developed is through collaboration between autistic adults, and parents of autistic people. Feel free to comment with your own thoughts and experiences. ~Eden🐢 (This thread is also on Twitter, @/ QueerlyAutistic ) #actuallyautistic #autismacceptance #autismawareness #neurodivergent #autisticpride #autisticadults #autismparent #autismmom #autismdad #aspergers #stimming

Pronouns: she/her Captions: if you’re a parent of an autistic kid and you haven’t told your kid that they’re autistic yet - why? Why would you do that to your kid? I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 19, that’s this year, and I really wish I knew I was autistic before because years of being bullied and ostracised and being in pain and not understanding myself and feeling guilt and shame and struggling and sometimes even being suicidal could have been so much easier to deal with if I knew I was autistic before. It’s going to get harder for your kid (because teenagers can be monsters ) and they need to understand themselves so that they can cope with things better and so that they can have a better life in general. Why wouldn’t you tell your kid that they’re autistic? I- I don’t understand that at all. Please tell your kid. These are excerpts from Shannon Des Roches Rosa’s recent article about ABA therapy. Her son is autistic, minimally verbal, and has high support needs. She is a wonderful ally to the autistic community, and does a lot of work advocating for the rights of autistic people like her son who need significant support in everyday life. You can read the full article by Googling the title and/or going to the Thinking Person’s Guide To Autism website. A professional diagnosis STILL doesn't prevent people from disbelief. Proof on paper STILL doesn't prevent someone from saying they don't see it. . Being obviously autistic doesn't stop a professional with a very stereotypical view of autism from misdiagnosing you. . If stimming helps you, do it. If anything I say helps you, I'm saying it to you. If anything I share you relate to, than it is for you. . I get the gripes with self diagnosis. And I'm never going to discourage someone from getting a professional opinion. . But our suicide rate is too high for me to invest my energy into coming for individuals when I could be coming for the system.
