Just impatiently waiting for Hawaii to lift its quarantine so I can get back out to visit my Bruddah @bruceomori . I’ve had 4 Hawaii trips cancel this month, but hopefully we resume service in July. I’ve seen some of the most incredible sights of my life thanks to this guy right here. He’s one of the world’s true gentlemen, and and all-world lava shooter. I will never forget the first time Bruce took me out to see the volcano up close and personal. It was all at once thrilling, exciting, and dangerous. Bruce said to me: “Just so you know if we go any further there is a chance that we might not come back, so I need to make sure you’re ok with that”. “Is that my only option?” I asked. “If you want a shot, yes”. So I reluctantly proceeded. Once we reached the edge, I quickly set up and peered down at the molten earth. It was the most surreal moment of my life. I fired off about 5 frames and retreated to my bag. “All set!” I said. Bruce hadn’t even taken his camera out yet. “Seriously?” He said. I realized that my pansy status would be legendary if I said what I WANTED to say, which was “YES”. So back in we went. Over time I became more confident in Bruce and @tomkualiiphotography abilities to keep me alive, and thankfully so. The memories will stay with me until my last breath. . #RRS2020
SHUTTERMONKEYS TV INTERVIEW: LINK IN BIO - If you have 45 minutes to fill and you’ve finished Netflix (as the father of a 1 year old…. eff you very much ), skip on over to the Shuttermonkeys TV Channel and view a video interview with the legendary @ianplantphoto , @ryandyar , and - to quote Ian - “Some Dork” where I completely monopolize the conversation with mindless tangents instead of letting the two professional photographers talk about anything helpful. To give you an idea of how it went, I called Ryan before we started and confessed that I had never used the video function on my camera and asked what settings I should use. With a voice serious enough to make me buy it, he told me to make sure that I way overexposed because it isn’t really an issue in video. So now it’s an interview with two guys and Casper the Friendly Ghost. The bastard is probably still laughing. And it went downhill from there. One of the things we talk about in the interview is my proclivity to comp stomp. So I will simply say this about the image I’m posting today: If you want to comp stomp this shot, feel free, but you better bring cookies because I shot it from my living room. Even though this was taken indoors, the shooting conditions were some of the most dangerous I’ve encountered. Bleary-eyed from being up all night with our then 8 month old, Mrs. Morgan finally had her down for an early morning nap when I arrived in the living room and completely freaked out over the conditions. I ran upstairs, grabbed my camera, and set up shop. I demanded that she turn off the TV and all the lights and sit in the pitch dark for 45 minutes so I wouldn’t get any glare off the glass. The constant clicking of the a shutter woke up little Kinsley, and if you’ve ever startled a sleeping 8 month old and then passed her off to her Mommy, you understand the grave peril of the situation. #worthit I figured there was no more appropriate way to mark the 40th anniversary of the Mt. St. Helens eruption than to post an image of Mt. Hood. #global_hotshotz #worldprime #jaw_dropping_shots #ig_world_colors #igrefined #igbest_shotz #globeshotz #ig_color #NikonNoFilter #ig_bliss #RRS2020
“Phoenix Rising” - Yesterday was #nationalnursesday . Usually I post some long rambling musing of another of my colossal miscues; or @ryandyar doing something silly like peeing himself. But the hellacious COVID 19 battle many of our nurses and doctors find themselves in requires our most sincere admiration and respect. “Thank you” will never be enough, and I think it’s incumbent on all of us to find a way to express our gratitude and admiration to the healthcare workers around the world who battle to save our lives, in an environment that they are keenly aware could kill them. I’m incredibly proud that my airline @united has stepped up to transport front line healthcare workers around the country free of charge to the areas they need to be despite the most challenging revenue environment in aviation history. The small way that I figured I could pay my respects is with a story. I doubt nurses can fully understand the impact they have on those of us who need them the most because there is ALWAYS the next patient in line. A few year ago I plowed into a medical issue that was slow to evolve but sudden and emergent to present itself. By the time I knew what happened I was in a serious health crisis that threatened my life and required immediate surgery. The first surgery revealed the severity of the issue, and the next day I was being wheeled back in to have my cancer, and with it my kidney removed. Spinning in pain, and weak from the first surgery, I arrived in the operating room to a crew of nurses and surgeons at once terrified for my life and wondering if death would be the only relief from the agony I was in. I was prepped for an epidural, the reason for which is not appetizing, and propped up by one of the nurses as I was too weak to sit up. “Just lean into me”, she said, and I complied. “Better yet, I give really good hugs”, she offered, and wrapped her arms around me while the needle was inserted. And in that moment, all my panic, pain, and fear evaporated as I allowed her empathetic energy to wash over me. That moment will be with me forever. To our nurses, this humble image is for you. Stay strong, stay healthy. You’re heroic. #RRS2020
Almost a decade ago, I was invited to join the incomparable @antonyspencer and @david_clapp_photo on their Lofoten, Norway photo tour. I lept at the chance to go, and it remains one of the most joyous and memorable experiences of my life. It was an incredible crew of folks who piled into a station wagon and a large rented van and headed out across Norway, Sweden, and Finland in search of the elusive aurora borealis. We had scattered sightings, but on the last night at around 4am things really went nuts and the sky shimmered in green. It was -30c and we had been out in this field for almost 10 hours when it finally happened. My eyelids kept freezing together and my cable release froze into a permanent erection, which I would have found amusing if I weren’t so bloody cold. It was that type of humor that carried the trip, and there was no shortage of sophomoric antics - which I love. The pinnacle of these shenanigans occurred the day prior while stopped by the side of a icy road for a break and scouting powwow. I’m relaxing in the van with my new friends when I see @david_clapp_photo approaching the front with a giant chunk of ice. Mind you, David is a responsible (in theory ) adult. I stare blankly out the front window at him and he stares blankly back. Then he shouts (for reasons I’ve yet to determine ) “I AM A SIX-YEAR-OLD BOY” and struggles the giant ice chunk above his head. With a ferocious lunge, he heaves it towards my head. It predictably shatters the front windshield. I’m still trying to figure out how he thought that was going to go. This was 2011? I expect the insurance claim is still ongoing.
As I sit in Daddy Daycare nursing some dinged up ribs I procured from falling down the stairs in the middle of the night while holding my 1 year old (Dad-Of-The-Year Award ), I’m thinking back to a great layover I had in Rochester while on a flying trip with the genius @zacharybright_images . (I’m now accepting my second award on this post for longest run-on sentence ) 🏆. We met before dawn in the parking lot, and Zach busted out some epic cookies his wife had sent along with him. I didn’t really pay much attention to anything he said after that, but I do recall him kindly offering up some weird tripod-octopus thingy which he claimed would be very helpful getting an angle over the wall in the gorge. “Naw, I’m straight”, I replied. “I don’t need fancy tools like that. I’m old school”. What that translates to is: “I don’t want to embarrass myself by getting my head stuck in a tripod that looks WAYYY too complicated for me to figure out how to operate”. We hiked in and came to this classic spot. It was then that I realized why Zach offered up the Octopus. In order to get a good angle on this shot you need to lean WAYYYY over the stone wall. Being 6’5”, I figured: I got this. So over I bent. Further, further, further, until “crack” went my rib. In case you missed that. A rib cracked due to the sheer weight of my torso resting on it. That’s a special kind of chubby. I contemplated my recent weight gain over several more cookies and some pizza later that day.
“Chip light”: If you have been following landscape photography over the last decade or so, you know exactly what that is. If you are a new whippersnapper (I’m totally fine with getting an “Ok Boomer” launched at me ), then allow me to educate. Some of us can walk the earth for months at a time and get nothing but crap light. But @chipphillipsphoto clearly sold his soul because biblical conditions follow his every step. Look at his photostream and you’ll see what I mean. Infuriatingly, Chip happens to be a world class shooter who always melds brilliant compositions with these light shows and creates staggeringly great imagery. On this day, @ryandyar , @davidthompsonphotography and I figured we might as well hit the standard Palouse Falls shot since we were really just waiting for sunrise for our planned shoot. Lo and behold, across the parking lot strode THE Chip Phillips. I was giddy. Obviously beautiful light would follow. And wouldn’t you know it.... I snuggled my tripod up to Chip’s hoping that some of the magic dust would rub onto my camera. Sadly, I think all I got was a tick. Shortly after the sun went down, the bugs predictably began hunting for the juiciest food source, which thanks to Shake Shack, is me. Anxious to show Chip that I was an experienced outdoorsman, I whipped out my special mosquito repellant bright blue suit with enclosed headgear. After several side glances from the gathered throng of photographers, I noticed a few snickers coming from @ryandyar who was standing in a short sleeve shirt. “Well, I haven’t gotten bitten once, so suck it Dyar!!!!!” His reply; “Yeah well neither have I. These are gnats”. Oh. So my one meeting with the great Chip Phillips and I look like a damned giant Smurf. #RRS2020
**NEW WEBSITE LIVE** (link in my bio ). —— 1 order of business: 99.985% of you are viewing IG on your phone. While the new site’s mobile platform is great, in order to fully appreciate @codyscapes genius, pull it up on a laptop/desktop ----- For over a year, I’ve been bugging, harassing, stalking, offering to spoon, and generally annoying Cody Wilson in an attempt to get him to build me a new site. Why Cody? Because he’s brilliant at design and computers and a creative genius. My photographs are like me: exceedingly average. But my mediocre shots looked like total snarge on my previous site. (Yes, snarge is a word. Look it up ). When Cody finally broke down 6 months ago and told me he was thinking about getting into the website building business, I gave him one small task. Make my images look sharp when viewed on my website. And just like that, Sharp Sites was born. Collaborating with me is no easy task. Cody has put in literally hundreds of hours of blood, sweat, and tears building this beast from the ground up. Every detail you see if his masterpiece. From my new logo (which is brilliant when you realize I’m a pilot ) to the little shutter square and name that appears when you hover over an image in a gallery, the creative little touches he dreamed up have totally floored me. My photography is kind of like me on my wedding day. Take a plain looking guy out of his sweats and put him in some nice clothes, and you can fool a lot of people into thinking he's actually sort of handsome. Well, my images are now wearing a Prince Harry-inspired Royal Blue suit. I could not be more proud and honored to have the inaugural Sharp Site. I am 100% convinced that Cody’s new venture offers the best value in website creation in the world. Will you be the next proud owner of a Sharp Site?
**** NEW WEBSITE COMING SOON **** The reason it’s going to be really good is that I have had almost nothing to do with it. I’ve been hassling @codyscapes to build me a proper site for years because he’s smart as hell and brilliantly creative. I think I finally wore him down and he has decided to start his own website building and design business using my site to build the architecture. He’s been working his ass off on it for months, and I can’t wait to share the finished product, which should be soon! Since the last story had literally nothing to do with the image, I’ll at least share the goings on here. Cody and I met at Hood and frantically tried to find a place where the mountain wasn’t totally socked in. This area was out last hope, but when we got here it was just a sea of fog. We snowshoed around blindly for a bit and finally reconvened to set up a shot.... just in case. Lo and behold, the mountain started to loom out of the fog and I frantically started to shoot. Cody, instead of shooting announced “I lost my phone somewhere out there” and looked forlorn. Dejected (and mildly panicked ), he packed off in general area he thought it might be. I, being the stand up friend that I am, did exactly nothing to help and merrily shot this image. When I got home, @courtney .morgan18 (with a healthy dose of disgust I might add ) said: “You mean you didn’t help him go look for it??” “No”, I replied, “but I DID get about 40 shots of him stuck up to his ass in a snow drift!” So a good day all around then! In all seriousness, I absolutely love the kid, and am blown away by the incredible work he has done on my behalf. I can’t wait to go live with the site and help him launch his web building business. 🤜🏻🤛🏻 #RRS2020
It’s been a 13 hour day of flying, and I was just getting settled into the hotel when I get a text from @ryandyar about some photography thoughts. At this point all is normal, as we routinely chat about news, processing, trip ideas etc. After some back and forth, we were getting ready to sign off for the night when things took a strange turn. I bid him goodnight, and his reply was: “Nighty night Dude. (BTW, Toy Story 4 was an awesome movie )”. “Yeah”, I replied, I’ll be having to watch those kind of things soon enough!” My daughter is still only 6 months old, so she’s more interested in eating her feet than Buzz Lightfoot or Woody Harrelson or whatever characters are in that movie. Ryan was about to have one of those moments when you should really just stop talking. I thought it was sweet that he was at home watching it with his daughter, even though she’s a teenager now. But she isn’t home. Oh, I thought, he must have watched it with Candace. @courtney .morgan18 loves those kind of movies too, which is kind of sweet really. No judgement on my part. Then it dawned on me that Candace is visiting her folks back East. His next text: “I swear to god, they are incredible. I just watched the latest while home alone as a 36 year old dude”. At this point I start looking desperately for a GIF that will appropriately humiliate him for this confession. But I didn’t have time before he confessed that it made him cry. ** ULTIMATE LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY COURSE ** — For almost 2 years, @ianplantphoto has been working with @zacmillsphotography to create an entirely new photography platform. @shuttermonkeys has been birthed from the loins of that labor (let that visual sink in for a moment... ) and with it, Ian created the Ultimate Landscape Photography Course - a video series that guides you every step of the way to creating masterful and memorable images. Included in the course is his excellent eBook on advanced composition. In a word, the course is magnificent. It’s been my privilege to know @ianplantphoto since I first started shooting. When I consider my top 3 favorite photographers, Ian has been on that list for a decade now. His compositions consistently make me shake my head and wonder... “HOW??” He’s in an increasingly elite club of photographers who don’t add skies, use composites, or rely on photoshop to create light. When you see his images, you will realize how special his work is given that fact. I have only met Zac online (no, not on Tinder... ), but his work and work ethic are utterly brilliant. Now I’m not one to sell out and promote someone’s project just because. I won’t leverage my 12 followers for just anybody. (Who am I kidding... I would drink a gallon of lead to prove “it’s safe” in exchange for three #2 pencils, but don’t tell Ian that ). I watched the course and was so blown away by the professionalism and general informativeness of it that I asked the guys if I could be involved in some way. They’ve granted me a 50% Off link to the course, which you can click on in my bio. You’re basically getting an entire workshop of instruction for the price of a shirt and you don’t have to go outside and potentially get malaria. Phlegmtastic Voyage - Phlegm created this image. @bruceomori and @tomkualii had taken @ryandyar and I out for a few days of amazing volcano shooting. We were typically up around 2am and played all day until well past sunset out at the ocean entry. On this particular evening, we shot sunset but weren’t ready to throw in the towel. A Stargazer check showed that at 3-4am, many of the planetary elements would be aligning around the plume at Halema’uma’u Crater. So in the wee hours of the morning we trucked up to the park, and perched on the overlook to see how things were looking. Bleak, was the answer. A cloud deck had rolled over the entire summit and blanketed the caldera revealing... nothing. No sky, or even plume. We quickly retreated back to the truck to ward off the surprising cold, and figured we might as well just hang until sunrise in hopes the color might show up. The only thing left to do was sleep. At this point I had been sick for a month. A nasty sinus infection had set up shop in my head, and was just waiting for me to get tired enough to stage a reunion tour. My trip to Hawaii with just a couple of hours of sleep a night was Lollapalooza to my annoyed mucus membranes. I drifted a bit, but a short time later I snapped awake choking on my own snot. I couldn’t breathe at all, which got my attention, so I flopped out of the truck to cough up a fur ball without waking the Boyz. When I composed myself I looked up and saw.... STARS. Trillions of them. Crystal clear skies. “LET’S ROLL” I hollered, and off we went to shoot the galaxy. If I hadn’t choked on my own snot, we would have slept through the show. Some of the best times of my life have been running around on zero sleep with these particular people in this particular place.
@codyscapes called me the other day with a once-a-decade story regarding a massive cock up by @ryandyar . I’ve personally witnessed many of his massive failures, but this one was Fruit Loops coming out your nose hysterical. *I don’t eat Fruit Loops.. I’m more of a Barbara’s Shredded Spoonful’s kind of guy, but if you’re going to spit cereal out your nose, you damned sure want it to be fruity. At any rate, RyRy’s big concern (and rightly so ), was that I was going to post the humiliation on IG ). IN A HEARTBEAT, as they say. I was ready to pounce, but was just strapping in to go fly, so it would have to wait. During the flight, I was literally giddy about regaling my legion of 18 followers with the story, but while composing what I was going to say in my mind, the hair on my back (which, thanks for that God.... I really love having hair starting to grow in odd places as I get older ) started to curl. I was taken back to this lovely area in the San Juan’s, and a GREAT trip from a few years ago with @ryandyar , his lovely wife @candacedyar , and @codyscapes . It was on this trip I was introduced to drones. This was my first opportunity to see one fly. It was also my first opportunity to see one fly away and never come back. 😂😂. But before it disappeared, I was given a crash course in the dastardly potential of drones in the hands of someone evil ( @ryandyar ). As you can see here; there are no trees. When *ahem* nature calls, the best you can do is find a large rock over a hill, dig a hole, and let the breeze in while you squat (in my 6’5” case ) awkwardly. I was mid balance when I heard the buzzing. And then it rose above the rock in front of me like some damned Apache Helicopter stalking a terrorist. My “movement” was being recorded in full HD. A long slow drone circle made sure to get every angle and dimple. His timing was perfect, because there was no “stopping short”. It was then that I knew. That footage would forever keep me from truly being able to humiliate @ryandyar . Until someone ninja’s his HD. At which time I’ll GLADLY tell the story. #thirty9co
Goodbye, my friend. It’s been a great run. I’ve spend many nights strapped to your roof...usually listening to the sonerous snores of @ryandyar . You’ve taken me to see things I wouldn’t have dreamed I would see, and never put a foot wrong. You’ve been truly one of the greatest vehicles I’ve ever owned. I thank you, and hope your new Mommy and Daddy love you as much as I have. @jeep and @jeep_wranglers , you done good with this one. @northwestjcdr , thanks for being THE BEST dealership I’ve ever been to. John, Ben, and Iain built this for me and have treated me like family 👍👍. Thanks for always getting me home. #jeepwrangler #jeep
2018 started off with a “Thelma and Louise” style road trip with @ryandyar . I was reminded of this last night when Thelma sent me a text that showed a Google search for his name. Coming in at #4 after Ryan Dyar Photography and a couple more results was “Ryan Dyar and Miles Morgan”. He was not amused. 😂😂😂. I’m like mold. Once I get in there, you pretty much have to sell your house because everything is ruined. At any rate, Thelma was headed down to scout locations for an upcoming workshop with Brad Pitt (aka @codyscapes ), so I invited myself along. (Mold tends to just go where it wants... not much you can do about it ). We trotted around the Alabama Hills with Brad in the back seat (just like the movie ), and he pipes up with: “Hey Miles, I want to shoot that comp you found with the eye hole in the rocks and the barrel cactus”. Thelma got really quiet. Turns out, “my” comp was a brilliant one that Thelma had found and graciously shown me several years ago and now somehow I am getting credit for it 😂😂😂. Just to rub it in I figured I would reshoot it with today’s newer equipment. @nikonusa , the D850 is freaking amazing. The sky here is a single ISO 9000 exposure. @reallyrightstuff @jeep #nikonnofilter
Awhile back, my Mirlfriend @ryandyar and I cruised around the southwest and during my research, I happened upon this location that I had remembered from an image by @henk .meijer.photography many years back. In our travels, we traversed through several airspace warning areas that I’m familiar with from my day job. This is where the fighter jets go to play, and it reminded me of one of my best friends, Mike Jacobson aka Charmin. I call him that because he’s squeezably soft. Charmin was an Air Force fighter pilot instructor stud, and spent years teaching some of our finest military pilots how to fly. Military guys are always looking for excitement, so one day during a training flight, Charmin was secretly delighted to hear on the radio of another jet that was in trouble and requesting assistance. Charmin went full Top Gun, got on the radio, barked “Red Squirrel 2, I’ll be there in 3 minutes” and, taking the T-38 from his student, lit the afterburners. Soon after, he was ripping across the Texas sky above Mach 1 (the speed of sound ). Three minutes passed, and Charmin strained to find the stricken target. But things didn’t look familiar. Probably because he had gone Mach 1.....in the wrong direction. So now he’s “Wrong Way Charmin”. I love that guy. #RRS2020
Regret. One of the ugliest words. It follows us around throughout our lives, and lands firmly on our psyche as we prepare to slip off in our final moments. If you’re lucky, you don’t have too many. If you’re smart, you will work to eliminate them while you have the means to do so. But some regrets have no cure. An opportunity missed... a moment lost... where there is no revisiting, and the sour aftertaste of failure lingers for all time. This was one of those days. I finally got an opportunity which I had long coveted: a chance to meet and shoot with the most underrated landscape photographer in the game. THE @zacharybright_images . A day of terrific experiences capped with our arrival for a sunset shoot at a wild location. Conditions looked promising, and hope was in the air. All that excitement was too much for Zach, and he had to use the bathroom. He hustled off to the surprisingly lovely facilities and hastily threw open the door. “Ummmmm....”, I yelled. “That’s the ladies restroom”. *pause, pause*. Zach looked around confused, slowly closed the ladies room door, and shuffled 10 feet to his left into the men’s room. Instantly I felt waves of nauseous regret fill my throat. The easiest thing in the world would have been to say nothing, break out my phone, and film him coming out of the ladies room; immediately posting to my IG stories for the world to enjoy. Opportunity lost. Forever. I had blown it. 😑 #global_hotshotz #worldprime #jaw_dropping_shots #ig_world_colors #igrefined #igbest_shotz #globeshotz #ig_color #NikonNoFilter #ig_bliss #amazing_shots #awesomeearth #master_shots #bns_earth #awesome_earthpix #earthoutdoors #artofvisuals #myrrs #hubs_united #earth_shotz #earth_reflect #bestnatureshot #splendid_earth #longexposure_shots #TestedTough #nationalearth #MoodyGrams
Day 4 of my solo alpine expedition began with the cold frost on the side of my tent shimmering in the first light of day. Exhausted from the 15 mile slow ascent the day before, I allowed myself to think that the thick fog obscuring the sunrise was a welcome chance to rest a few minutes more. I had forgotten my bear spray, and this was not the sort of place that you want to forget bear spray. Not quite sure of where I was or how to get back across the forested range I’d been struggling through for days, I worked to suppress the variety of fears that were infecting my psyche. There was time to snap a few quick frames of the virgin forest before hastily packing up and pushing on above the tree line in an effort to outrace the forecast blizzard. Orrrr.... B ). I stepped onto my back porch in my underwear, shot a couple of frames, and went back in to have some cereal. #global_hotshotz #worldprime #jaw_dropping_shots #ig_world_colors #igrefined #igbest_shotz #globeshotz #ig_color #NikonNoFilter #ig_bliss #amazing_shots #awesomeearth #master_shots #bns_earth #awesome_earthpix #earthoutdoors #artofvisuals #myrrs #hubs_united #earth_shotz #earth_reflect #bestnatureshot #splendid_earth #longexposure_shots #TestedTough #nationalearth #RRS2020
Best day of my life. I married my best friend. I still can’t believe it is real! Been through hell and back with this girl and she never left my side. And soon, 2 becomes 3. I love you more with each passing minute. Somehow, the amazing @munliphotography made even me look good here. That takes SERIOUS talent.
It was too late in the season for winter images. It was too early in the season for wildflowers. But I had a free day and decided to do a little photography, so I figured I would try to rummage up an early season ice cave. It’s not smart to shoot in an ice cave alone (the entrance to one spot collapsed while we were scouting another area ) so I asked @codyscapes and my old friend @kevinmcneal30 if they wanted to come along. I hadn’t seen either in quite some time, so I was absolutely chuffed to get some quality friend time in. After a warm greeting in the parking lot, we assembled our gear and prepared for the long snowy climb. Kevin donned waders and rubber boots. “Ummmm.... Kev? What are you going to hike in?” “This”, he said. “But its a pretty icy hike and the snow is still deep in some spots. Those boots.... have completely slick bottoms. How are you going to make it up?” Well, like a freaking mountain goat is how. Somewhere in the 9 years since I’ve seen him, Kevin became an ice ballerina. Cody on the other hand, stood there in shorts. “Is your snow gear in your bag?”, I asked. “No, this is it”. “Wait. You don’t have pants?” “No.” Gloves? “No”. “A hat?” “No”. “...... Cody, it’s an ICE cave”. “Yeah, I didn’t really think this through.” Nothing gave me more pleasure than watching Cody butt-ski back down the glacier with snow compacting into his junk. The end result was me making a mess of a perfectly good location, but the colors were amazing. I did very little processing on this image - and it still took me 2 hours. #jaw_dropping_shots #ig_world_colors #igrefined #igbest_shotz #globeshotz #ig_color #NikonNoFilter #ig_bliss #amazing_shots #awesomeearth #master_shots #bns_earth #awesome_earthpix #earthoutdoors #artofvisuals #myrrs #hubs_united #earth_shotz #earth_reflect #bestnatureshot #splendid_earth #longexposure_shots #TestedTough #nationalearth #MoodyGrams
I’ve been flying jets for @united for over 23 years now. In a sense, it defines me. So I’m constantly working to perfect my craft. The mastery of an almost 200,000 # machine takes countless hours of thought and practice. Safe, caring, dependable, and efficient. That is how I endeavor to move our customers, for they are guests in my small slice of the sky. A fully loaded commercial jetliner is no place to show off your fancy maneuvers and explore the outside edges of the flight envelope...so I bought a drone. As part of United’s push to leverage it’s incredible network, several interesting destinations have been added. One of them, Moab, peaked my interest, so I invited @ryandyar to join me to take another shot at getting a decent image of Factory Butte. Soon the drones were in the air. Supremely (over ) confident in my flying abilities, I ignored the “Battery low, aircraft will return to the home point” warning and flew deeper and into the canyon-like veins of the surrounding terrain. Finally, I figured I had the shots I was looking for, and when I turned for home, my drone was screaming at me about low battery level. Cockily, I eased into the throttle and started to do the calculations of battery level, distance, and speed. Uh oh. I had learned from previous experience that when your drone gets ticked off enough at you, it announces “Landing” and starts to slowly descend, like it or not. Sure enough, a few minutes later, down it came. Now it was simply a lesson in geometry. Ryan, who had smartly landed with plenty of remaining battery, started loudly coaxing my craft even lower in hopes of seeing me have to hike all over the desert looking for the crash site. After a few agonizing minutes, it became apparent that I was going to make it…just. With about 30 feet to go I heard, “Battery level insufficient for landing”, and it started to tumble…right into my outstretched hand. I think I’ll just stick to flying jets for awhile. Lightning was captured by ground based camera and combined with drone image. If you catch lightning with a drone, go straight to Vegas. #UnitedJourneyContest #BeingUnited .
I got some devastating medical news a couple of days ago. The shock is still settling over my psyche like the snow on Mt Hood. After escalating doctors diagnosis, I finally procured a meeting with a world renowned specialist in the field. Hearing her say “there is nothing we can do for you” made the room spin. In pilot-speak we call this running out of airspeed and ideas. My mind is struggling to calculate the facts of my new reality. There is no treatment. There is no cure. There is no more hope. The diagnosis is like a thunderclap: My big toenails will never grow normally again. They will be hideous and grotesque until the day I die. Sorry @cmurdock . You have to love me anyway. 😬........ soo, to those of you that are reading this and worried about me - I’m TOTALLY fine!! This is a (poor ) attempt at a joke! Well, my toenails aren’t a joke. They are seriously gross. #jaw_dropping_shots #ig_world_colors #igrefined #igbest_shotz #globeshotz #ig_color #NikonNoFilter #ig_bliss #amazing_shots #awesomeearth #master_shots #bns_earth #awesome_earthpix #earthoutdoors #artofvisuals #myrrs #hubs_united #earth_shotz #earth_reflect #bestnatureshot #splendid_earth #longexposure_shots #TestedTough #nationalearth #MoodyGrams #pnw
I try to come up with amusing stories for my images - with varying degrees of success. Today, however, my post is truly knee-slappingly hysterical: I’m giving a presentation at B&H Photo on Monday, July 16th from 4-6pm East Coast USA time. (That’s 3pm for you folks in Minot, ND ). I absolutely loathe self promotion, but the usual presenters at B&H draw thousands of viewers, and I’m going to feel badly when 8 people tune in so I figured I owe it to them to at least mention it. If you want to be entertained by watching me make an absolute fool of myself, feel free to sign up for the livestream (link in my profile ). I’m sure it’ll make its way to YouTube eventually as well. If you’re in NYC on Monday and want to watch my flail live, don’t heckle me. I WILL cry. I think the presentation is called “Changing Your Perspective in Landscape Photography”, or something earth shattering like that 😏. #flounder #flail #embarrassing #Beuller ....Beuller....Beuller #isthisthingon #crickets #B &H
People are constantly asking me about how to find good compositions in complex scenes, so I thought I would write a quick tutorial about the techniques I used in the Death Valley dunes here. Actually; that’s a small fib. Literally no one ever has asked me how to find a composition... probably because I usually just rip off @ryandyar . But that’s beside the point. I’m writing it anyway. You start in an area where @davidthompsonphotography promises you’ll get a lot of wind. You get biblically pissed at him when you arrive and it’s as calm as Val Kilmer in the upcoming Top Gun 2. SOO excited for that... but I digress again. You text him snotty messages and marvel that you can now text in Death Valley. Next, add heat. Lots of it. Preferably over 100, which isn’t hard here. Then, wear long pants as that’s all you brought for your trip because Death Valley was a game-time decision. Now, hike a couple of miles in sand. Finally; and this one is important; be moderately fat. You don’t have to go full orca, but you need to be reasonably plump and out of shape. Optional bonus, get rid of a kidney before you go as I’ve found it lowers your stamina. If you’re not sure what to do with it once it’s out, pack in ice and send it to me. Once you’re out in the field you’re going to get overwhelmed by the infinite possibilities in every. single. direction. So make sure you trudge around aimlessly for a couple of hours and track up any good shot you think you might find. This leads to utter and complete exhaustion. NOW you’re ready to find your comp. Plop down your tripod and point it in some random direction because you’re so tired you don’t give a flying f^ #% what it’s pointed at. Voila. Oh, and thank you Baby Jesus for conjuring up the 40mph wind literally out of nowhere right before sunset. I deeply appreciate it. #RRS2020
“The Revenge of Whereis”: My Boi @davidthompsonphotography dubbed me Whereis years ago. As is “where is my tripod?” “Whereis my hat?” “Whereis my ice cream I lost 2 hours ago... and why is the inside of my bag sticky?” And the worst.... “Whereis our car keys after running around the desert for 3 hours?” I can’t be mad about the nickname - it’s appropriate. But karma can be a nasty mistress, DT... David was kind enough to take me around the Arizona desert to all sorts of cool spots he had located. Our favorite was here - Rojas Wash, named after @rojaspix who found this spot and kindly shared the coordinates with us. One morning we arrived at an overlook that had very average camera potential. It was a drone spot primarily, so I half heartedly set up the Nikon. DT, being adventurous, headed down the wash to try to find some more interesting stuff. I gave up quickly and started droning. The morning soft light was beautiful, and i happily flew through one battery into my second. As the light was peaking I heard a soft “FUUUUU$$$$KKKK” being carried on the wind. 10 minutes later, light gone harsh, I see DT trudging towards the car. “Why aren’t you flying???” I asked. “I forgot the cord to my remote in the car”.... Whereis, indeed, beeyatch 😬😬
